happy halloween wishes from san fran!
this link was shared with me simultaneously by two people, so i thought i'd make sure you saw it too: halloween's scariest costumes.
and just so you know, the republicans are working hard to make sure that all minority votes are counted. you can read about their earnest efforts here.
(thanks, keenan!) enjoy the holiday, all!

oh yeah, take THAT new york!!!
and i mean that for two reasons.
1. yankees fall to sox. (of course i'm mentioning that this evening) hooray!
2. i just read through my Daily Candy emails and found out that we have an amazing service called ritter's breakfast delivery here in town, which will deliver brunch, including newspapers and flowers. god bless chicago!

happy um, shoe-lidays!
somehow, seeing that hallmark has a tree-shaped ornament made of shoes made me smile. if you're female, it probably made you smile too.
i was talking to my best guy friend in town the other night (i guess -- i really don't have any guy friends in town, and he's a really cool guy that i work with) and i pointed out that somehow i have all of this knowledge about shoes, makeup, handbags and high fashion in general. i'm sure i don't have as much as true fashionistas, but somehow i have this basic girl amount. i think it magically gets transmitted as i go about my daily life. i mean, i'm really observant, so over time i'm just bound to notice that tons of celebs are sporting the newest hottest louis vuitton purse (which would have been the Theda, for some reason, this past season).
i think guys must be somehow programmed to remember sports statistics and sci-fi novels. somehow steve has become even more adept at remembering these things in recent years. i know he mocks my knowledge of moisturizers and stilettos, but i think we're even in terms of useless gender-specific crap.
.....
i haven't been posting much lately (other than a few stupid links), and for the three of you that read this, i'm sorry. i wish i could say that i've been up to something interesting, but unfortunately that's not the case. i've been working more (you *know* i'm a workaholic!), i've been trying to get to the gym (i'm a cheapskate that wants a good return on that investment!!!), and well, i've been better about being social (hooray!). i've met up with some girlfriends lately and i feel like i've finally got real friends here in town (score!). we've had several double-datey sorts of events lately too, which has been awesome, and even went over to our friends' place for dinner (hooray for ann and danny!).
and then there's the wonderfully comforting fact that this move seems to have made us even closer: we've really been having lots of fun hanging out lately. i'm sure the lack of an NHL hockey season helps, but i think this year overall has been wonderful. maybe this move -- and the shared risk and exploration -- will be good for us. we weren't in a bad place to begin with (thank god!), but it's always nice to unexpectedly find ways to improve things, don'tcha think? now if only that overall positive feeling about things can extend into the cold, dark winter...

i'm really bummed that i can't find a link or a photo to share with ya'll, since i read about the coolest wedding idea ever today, and wanted to let you in on it.
apparently, local chicago artist ben stone developed a robot called Nuptron 4000, and used it for his wedding last month. the robot, which stands 7 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds, played a pre-recorded sermon through a boom box mounted on the back. according to the article in friday's edition of RedEye, the "forceful monotone delivery and its electronic resonance had the audience focusing on every word." the article also claimed that the bride's dad "was worried it would be dumb, but he said it was powerful."
um, sure.

TV news that makes me smile:
E! Entertainment, the original home of reality programming, will introduce The Entertainer, a 10-part series featuring Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton, in his nationwide search for the next Las Vegas superstar. Look for the debut of Mr. Entertainer in January 2005.
Flavor Flav and Sylvester Stallone's ex, Brigitte Nielsen, who appear on the current edition of The Surreal Life, will also be together (gulp!) in new upcoming VH1 reality series Strange Love.

i don't mean to sound like a michigan-basher. really, i don't. i was really ticked off when the detroit city council ONCE AGAIN showed themselves to be morons with their Africa Town proposal (sheesh). however, i have to rant about mike cox. i have been appalled each time i drive between ann arbor and chicago and see his billboards along I-49 with handcuffs and snarky slogans about putting fathers who don't pay child support behind bars. argh! i'm for collecting child support -- don't get me wrong! -- but i don't know if having people serve jail time makes sense.
anyhow, here's the latest on mike cox and my fave michigan company:
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox unveiled the billboard contest in a 9/23/04 PRNewswire release. According to the release, Michigan children under age 18 are urged to create and submit drawings to Paykids Foundation calling attention to the encouragement of payment of child support. The winning drawing will be used to create a billboard to be placed near a major Michigan highway. Domino's Pizza gift certificates and other prizes, including a school pizza party, will be given to some children who have entered the contest.
i love the mockup of the winning billboard posted here. i mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that it's a bad idea to have kids particpating in this sort of contest. i can't remember the last time i agreed with something on Fox News, but an article by Wendy McElroy is, in my humble opinion, hard to argue with:
A child is half mother, half father. What emotional impact does it have on children when a government official urges them to denounce half of who they are? How will it impact a child’s relationship with a noncustodial parent when his or her denunciation is posted for the world to see? And if Cox lives up to the threat posed by the handcuffs portrayed on billboards — if he throws a "deadbeat" parent in jail--will the child live forever with a terrible guilt for having participated in that process?
When a divorce lands in court, children should be insulated as much as possible from adult decisions like alimony and support payments. They should not be bribed with pizzas into becoming part of a legal enforcement process against one parent.
so apparently there was a boycott urged of domino's, and you can still find the contact information for the heros in sr. management at domino's here. apparently they've distanced themselves from the whole debacle, claming their brand and prizes were used without their permission, but i don't know how much i believe that. after all, that company has been associated since founding with crazy-ass causes. so i says, go ahead and write 'em if you'd like, and see what they have to say for themselves.

if you loathe the poncho trend as much as steve and i do, you will enjoy this essay on slate. ponchos=blech.
i am *SO* not calling bill o'reilly ever again. creepy. you can read the whole court document here, on TheSmokingGun.com. i got the heebie jeebies reading it.

tonight we celebrated steve's birthday (which was tuesday) yet again (we went to a yummy sushi place tuesday night).
i surprised him by getting tickets to a pre-season Chicago Wolves game with another couple. for those of you who aren't big hockey fans, the Wolves are the farm team for the Atlanta Thrashers (LAME!) and the games are really fun since you can sit pretty darn close, the mascot is CRAZY popular, and they let fights go on a lot longer than in the NHL. so tonight was a pre-season game with them playing the Grand Rapids Griffins, the farm team for the Red Wings.
i am horrible at keeping a secret, so i was thrilled that he didn't figure out where we were going ahead of time. we had even planned a story that we'd use to throw him off: since the arena isn't far from Ikea, we were going to say that we were going there to buy the new Steeven side table (*not* a real product), and that we had dinner reservations afterward at Medieval Times.
as mentionned, this was a pre-season game, so instead of playing on their home ice at Allstate Arena, the Wolves were playing at this tiny high school hockey arena, and so we threw Steve off pretty good. in fact, as we were driving past Allstate Arena (in a HUGE traffic jam caused by a rolled-over semi that's apparently still backed up now according to traffic.com), steve asked if we were going to Medieval Times. we all cracked up laughing! of course, since we *weren't* going to Medieval Times, now we have to schedule that trip. any takers out there?
on a goofy side note, here are my favorite news stories from today:
1. apparently the world's largest flower has just bloomed at the Sydney Botanical Gardens. they've been trying to get it to bloom since 1992! unfortunately, it smells like shit! here's what the BBC has to say.
2. i'm not sure if you are on the Crate + Barrel catalog mailing list, but we seem to get one a week.
apparently, a photo assistant (and "performance artist") who helped put together the fall catalog decided to put his actual home number in one of the photos. on one of the home office armoires, you can see a note "dinner with marc" and a phone number scrawled on a whiteboard.
apparently, since the catalog went out he has received hundreds of phone calls, and he's been traveling around the country taking strangers to dinner. he's usually gathered groups in the various cities, so if you're up for meeting new people, dig out that crate and barrel catalog and give marc a ring.

news that really bums me out: the much ballyhooed $650 million las vegas monorail's problems have only gotten worse. the monorail opened july 15 (six months late) and was closed on sept. 8 after two incidents
a wheel fell off on Sept. 1, and on Sept. 8 a washer fell from a guideway, landing on a power rail next to the track and causing sparks. apparently now they've given up on announcing that the monorail will open again
sheesh.
in other sin city news, it's been announced where the Hooters casino will be: the san remo hotel and casino will undergo a $120 million update (which will take about a year). don't let the renovation pricetag freak you out, though: a member of the Hooters casino ownership group identified the casino's target clientele as ``middle America. Hooters is football, it's NASCAR, it's golf, it's wings, it's beer,' he said. and he pledged that room rates will be reasonable, at about $100/night!

steve is going to be sooooo excited to see this! since jimmy fallon left SNL in the spring, i was wondering who would take over "weekend update" or if tina fey would host it alone.
well, the chicago sun-times is again impressing me with its knack for covering the ridiculous stuff i wish i didn't care about, and has a
story today outing the big secret: it's not clear yet whether tonight will be a "tryout" for the new hosting pair, or if the plan is to rotate tina's co-host every week, but for tonight amy poehler will take a turn.
i just hope i can keep steve from licking the TV. he thinks tina and amy are both HOTHOTHOT!

i was wondering what mr. t was up to lately. if you were too, you might want to read this story about his speaking engagement at a local church. what a nice surpise to find out so much more about B.A. Baracus, including the 52-year=old Chicago native's declaration that "When I'm in the house of God, I don't wear my jewelry, if you're looking for my jewelry. All you see is my heart of gold."
